To Any Mom Who’s Ever Felt Less Than

Stay-at-home moms tend to feel like working moms are superheroes who can do it all — working an 8-hour day and then coming home and immediately making a delicious and nutritious dinner for the family they love. On the other side of that same coin, working moms can easily get jealous of stay-at-home moms, considering they get all the “good stuff,” without ever having to miss a single milestone with their kids.

Misconceptions can be hard to avoid, especially in the realm of motherhood. As a stay-at-home mom myself, I’ve been guilty of feeling less than.

I work 10 hours a week outside my house and spend the rest of my time in the trenches with my little people. I didn’t miss their first steps, or any of their feedings, day or night. I was there for it all, but the mundane pace of stay-at-home mom life can get to me.

It’s easy to feel insignificant when the only job you’re doing, day in and day out, doesn’t pay and doesn’t get you the promotions you’re hoping for.

Admittedly, I’ve wondered what it would be like to find my way in the corporate world. I’ve wondered if showing my kids I had a work ethic outside the home would be more inspirational than me sitting at home, folding their laundry.

In the end, we’re all just out here trying to raise people that will go on to live healthy, happy lives.

To me, working moms are other-worldly beings who excel in the career world and the mom world alike. They put dinner on the table. They never miss a meeting. They work their way to the top and make it to as many baseball games as possible. They’re basically magic. Or are they?

I have a few working mom friends who have voiced to me in the past how much they wish that staying at home with their kids was an option for them. To these moms, it’s easy to dwell on the scraped knees they aren’t home to kiss, the slow mornings they don’t get to share with their babies and the milestone moments they entrust to someone else.
