Table Mountain Cableway will shut down for annual maintenance from Monday, 15 July – Sunday, 1 September 2024. It will reopen, weather permitting, on Monday, 2 September 2024.
Our closure for such an extended time is in line with our maintenance schedule, in accordance with international standards.
We will perform a full cable replacement for the first time since the 1997 revamp, as well as maintenance of the hanging and running gear, as per original equipment manufacturer specifications.
The Cableway, along with all commercial and public outlets and operations at both the Upper and Lower Stations, will remain closed to the public for the duration. This includes shops, restaurants and ablution facilities.
Table Mountain itself is still accessible to hikers. Most of the routes and walkways will still be accessible, and you can still climb to the summit. However, the hiking trails directly under the pathway of the cables will be closed, as there will be extensive work happening overhead.
Hikers should be mindful of changing weather conditions when embarking on a hike up Table Mountain, knowing they would have to hike back down.
You can still collect and use your free birthday special ticket: If your birthday falls within our 2024 annual maintenance period, you can collect your birthday tickets during the month of September 2024. Please bring along your valid SA ID document, driver’s licence or birth certificate (inclusive of an SA ID number) to prove you have celebrated your birthday during the seven-week shutdown.
Cable Card extension: Cable Cards that are valid during our 2024 annual maintenance period will automatically be extended by seven weeks.
You may hike up and down Table Mountain: At your own risk. Remember the cable cars and all our facilities – including our restrooms, eateries and shops – will not be open during this time. Please hike with a registered guide and follow safety guidelines.
You can still feast your eyes on what’s on offer at the Cableway: Follow us on social media and check out what to expect on your next visit, our responsible tourism initiatives and so much more.
