Enjoy the beauty of ballet up close as Swan Lake dances onto IMAX screens

Have you ever wondered how the four cygnets keep such perfect time as they perform the much-loved “Dance of the Cygnets” during the second act of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake? What about all the emotions during the Black Swan pas de deux, considered by many to be the most famous dance of the ballet for both its technical difficulty and dramatic cohesion, as Siegfried falls for Odile, believing her to be Odette?

Ballet fans across the country will soon have the opportunity to appreciate the technique, dexterity and mastery of the dancers in detail when one of the world’s most beloved ballets, Swan Lake, is released in IMAX at Ster-Kinekor for a limited run.

The ballet will be screened in IMAX on 8 and 9 November at 19h30, and on 10 November at 15h15, with a 2D screening in select cinemas at 14h30 on 10 November. The duration of the performance is 145 minutes.

First time ever in IMAX

For the very first time, admirers of this beautiful art form can enjoy Swan Lake up close on the giant IMAX screen, with a front-row seat to this never-before-seen immersive cinema experience. It was filmed for IMAX at the Paris Opera under the direction of Isabelle Julien.

The story of Swan Lake

During his birthday celebrations, Prince Siegfried must choose a bride. Trying to escape reality, he dreams of a perfect love. His tutor reminds him of his duties, but during a dreamlike getaway, the prince meets Odette, a princess transformed into a swan by the powerful sorcerer Rothbart. Only true love can break the spell. Captivated, Siegfried promises to save her and invites her to his party. To trap the prince, Rothbart sends his daughter Odile, disguised as Odette, to seduce him.
