With over 10 million global deaths attributed to cancer annually, the disease remains a leading cause of mortality. World Cancer Day, observed annually in February, unites the global community to confront one of humanity’s most significant challenges.

Furthermore, experts predict a 77% increase in new cancer cases by 2050 due to factors like ageing populations and exposure to unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, lung cancer ranks as the most common, followed by breast, colon, prostate and stomach cancers. In South Africa, lung and colorectal cancer are prevalent among men, while cervical and breast cancer affect a significant number of women.

“Despite ongoing advancements, barriers to cancer care continue, including financial constraints, limited access to healthcare and inequalities especially in rural and economically disadvantaged groups,” says Dr Karla Talbot, GP with telehealth provider, Zarcare.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla and Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko recently emphasised the importance of screening, noting that more than a third of cancer cases are preventable, and another third are curable through early detection and proper treatment.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer confirms the escalating global burden of cancer – and while research and innovation bring significant advancements in treatment, a global commitment is essential to address this pressing issue.

“Education and early detection are key,” says Talbot. “And that is why, in unity with the global mission of raising awareness, educating and driving action against cancer, Zarcare will be hosting a free online webinar on 24 February 2024.”

The event will feature Dr Talbot as well as specialist wellness counsellor Liesl Townsend.
