South Africa’s spam call problem is not stabilising – it is accelerating.
Truecaller identified over 14 billion spam calls in South Africa in the first five months of the year – a 23% year-on-year increase. Spam messages reached almost 3.2 billion in the same period. South Africans blocked 5.9 billion spam calls from January to May 2026, up 58% year-on-year, a sign of both the scale of the problem and the growing response to it.
This data forms the backdrop to Truecaller’s launch of Family Protection: a feature designed specifically for the reality that not everyone in a family is equally equipped to handle what is now an industrialised, automated fraud threat.
What is Family Protection?
South Africa’s spam problem has a specific human dimension. Scammers do not discriminate – they target whoever is most likely to answer. That often means older family members; young, naïve phone users; people waiting for an important call; or anyone who still extends a basic level of trust to an incoming number.
The 2026 data shows just how aggressively the threat has escalated. In March 2026 alone, Truecaller detected more than 151 million new spammers targeting South African users. This spike in new spammers is not an anomaly to be explained away; it is evidence of automated, machine-scale fraud being deployed at a pace that individual awareness alone cannot match.
“This is a uniquely South African trend,” says Mmathebe Zvobwo, director of Market Development for South Africa at Truecaller. “Spam in our market is not only about fraud. It’s also about aggressive, high-volume outreach that erodes trust in legitimate communication. When people stop answering their phones, the entire communication ecosystem breaks down.”
Family Protection is a new feature built directly into the Truecaller app, on both Android and iPhone. It lets up to five people form a trusted family group, with a designated Family Admin who actively manages spam protection for all connected members.
The insight behind the feature is straightforward: Most families already have one person who handles the tech questions, updates the apps and says “let me check that first”. Family Protection formalises that role and gives it real tools, turning a sense of responsibility into practical, daily protection for the people who matter most.
A group can have more than one Admin, so the responsibility can be shared. Admins can also keep their own block settings separate from the rest of the group.
What can the Family Admin do?
The Family Admin has a clear dashboard of tools to manage protection across the group:
- Set and update spam protection levels for each family member.
- Manage a shared blocklist – including verified businesses, foreign numbers and hidden numbers.
- Receive live fraud alerts when a family member is on a suspicious call (Android).
- Remotely end a suspicious call to a family member (Android).
- View real-time status signals: battery level, phone activity and availability (Android).
- Update the spam list and view weekly protection reports (Android).
- Block caller names (with Premium).
- Enable Auto-Block Spam for the group (with Premium).
On Android, the Admin has the full suite of remote support tools, including the ability to cut off a suspicious call as it is happening, regardless of whether the Admin is on Android or iPhone. This is designed for situations where a family member is in the middle of a scam call and may not recognise it.
Free feature, premium upgrade
Family Protection is free and built directly into the Truecaller app with no additional download required. For families wanting stronger protection, Truecaller Premium Family adds advanced spam blocking, automatic rejection of high-risk numbers, caller name blocking and an ad-free experience.
Family Protection is Truecaller’s answer to the reality that South Africa’s escalating spam crisis requires collective, managed protection that is actively maintained rather than passively hoped for.
