Space Ranger Fred, the children’s book series known for its humour-driven adventure stories, has announced an expanded vision aimed at helping children aged 6 to 12 to build confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills through storytelling and real-world experience.
The expansion positions Space Ranger Fred as a literacy-led learning platform that supports how children think and engage with challenges, rather than as a formal STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) curriculum or academic programme. The approach focuses on reading for enjoyment while quietly developing the habits sof thinking that underpin STEM learning.
Central to this vision is the introduction of Menturity™: a term created by the Space Ranger Fred programme to describe a child’s growing ability to think, communicate, imagine, problem-solve and take action with confidence. Menturity™ is developed through story, play and hands-on experience, rather than memorisation or screen-based instruction.
“Menturity™ is about helping children understand that learning is not about being clever or having the right answer immediately,” says Space Ranger Fred creator and author, Matt Newnham. “It is about giving children the confidence to try, to make mistakes safely, and to try again. When that fear is removed, curiosity and problem-solving come naturally.”
The Space Ranger Fred stories are built around characters who encounter setbacks, adapt their thinking and persist until problems are resolved. This narrative structure is designed to normalise mistakes and reduce anxiety around learning, particularly in areas that children often perceive as difficult or intimidating.
As part of its expansion, Space Ranger Fred is developing a broader story-led ecosystem that extends beyond books. Planned initiatives include teacher and scholar learning portals that will provide simple guidance for adults supporting children through story-based experiences. These resources are intended to encourage discussion, movement, experimentation and reflection, without turning storytelling into formal lessons.
A key emphasis of the platform is off-screen learning. While digital tools will support access and co-ordination, the core experiences are designed to take place away from screens. Children are encouraged to speak, build, move, collaborate and test ideas in the real world, reinforcing confidence through action rather than passive consumption.
“In many parts of the world, children are surrounded by content, but have fewer opportunities to apply ideas through doing,” Newnham says. “Space Ranger Fred is about restoring those experiences to childhood in a way that feels joyful, inclusive and achievable for every child.”
Progress within the Space Ranger Fred programme is observed through everyday behaviours rather than formal assessment. These include language and expression, emotional and social confidence, curiosity and imagination, and real-world action. Development is treated as descriptive and growth-focused, emphasising participation and willingness to try rather than performance.
This approach allows Space Ranger Fred to align naturally with literacy priorities, social and emotional development, and early problem-solving skills, while remaining flexible across different educational and cultural settings. It is designed to support children who may be reluctant readers or who lack confidence in traditional learning environments, without applying labels or academic pressure.
