Urology Hospital puts women’s silent struggles in the spotlight

As Women’s Month highlights empowerment, Urology Hospital is spotlighting the ‘taboo’ with a workshop for women over 40—an age when many begin facing real health challenges.

In South Africa, about 10 million women — 1 in 3 — are in the age group for menopause, urinary incontinence affects 1-in-3, and breast and cervical cancer are the top two cancers affecting women. “These issues often go undiscussed. Urology Hospital is committed to changing that,” says gynaecologist Prof Z. Abdool of Urology Hospital, Pretoria.

“Women shouldn’t suffer in silence—bladder leaks, recurring UTIs, painful bladder syndrome, overactive bladder and pelvic organ prolapse are not just part of getting older,” explains Dr M. Hoek. “These conditions are often brushed off as ‘normal,’ leaving many to quietly endure them. But help is available, and no woman should feel she has to live with these issues alone.”

Urology Hospital’s expert-led workshop, themed “Life After 40 – Empowering Women to Take Charge of Their Health”, will feature urologists, nephrologists, colorectal surgeons and gynaecologists addressing often-overlooked issues while breaking stigmas, raising awareness and equipping women with the knowledge they need to take charge of their health.

“Women need to advocate for their health—and this workshop is a powerful place to start,” says urologist Dr N. Sigasa. “Too many don’t know where to turn. With events like this, we can give women the information and confidence they need to take control of their well-being.”

This Women’s Wellness event is a powerful celebration of women’s health: customised discussions and interactive sessions designed to empower, educate and support women over 40 in taking control of their health and well-being.
