Gone are the days of the simple PB&J lunches many of us grew up with. Today’s lunchboxes look very different, not just because parents want healthier meals but because many kids simply can’t eat what we once took for granted.
According to Professor Claudia Gray, a paediatrician and allergologist at the Kids Allergy Centre and an allergy consultant at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, food allergies in children are increasingly recognised in South Africa, with an estimated 2–3 out of every 100 children affected by a true food allergy, and many more experiencing sensitivities that require careful dietary planning.
Nanuki is a South African snack brand rising to meet that need. All Nanuki products are plant-based, nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and preservative-free, created with the modern lunchbox (and sensitive tummies) in mind.
In classrooms full of curious minds and tummies, food should fuel focus and playtime, not stress.
“Parents should be able to pack lunchboxes with confidence,” says Nadia Moolman, founder of Nanuki. “We aimed to make snacks that are genuinely delicious and enjoyable for kids, while giving parents peace of mind that they won’t trigger an allergic reaction or hidden ingredient worry.”
She adds, “We also want to normalise inclusive eating, snacks that every child can enjoy together. School should be about learning and making friends, not about who has to sit out at break time.”
Happy, nourished kids are better able to focus in class and play.
