10 adults suffer a stroke every hour – know the symptoms so you can act F.A.S.T

Our country is facing a silent but deadly health crisis. Every hour, around 10 South Africans suffer a stroke or related heart conditions, with an estimated 225 lives lost each day. Globally, the number reaches 15 million cases every year, which highlights a growing public health concern that shows no sign of slowing down.

“Strokes are one of the most preventable yet devastating health events we face. At Bestmed, we believe that awareness, early detection and lifestyle support are key to reducing its impact. We reaffirm our commitment to empowering our members with the knowledge and tools to act F.A.S.T. and live healthier lives,” says Dr Dion Kapp, executive: Managed Healthcare Member at Bestmed Medical Scheme.

During National Stroke Week (28 October to 3 November), medical professionals are sounding the alarm. Strokes are increasingly striking younger people under the age of 50, due to a combination of traditional risk factors such as high bold pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, as well as and non-traditional risk factors including illicit drug use, inflammatory diseases or blood-clotting disorders.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, depriving brain cells of oxygen, a process that can cause permanent brain damage or death within minutes. While some stroke survivors may recover fully, others are unfortunately left with long-term disabilities that affect their independence, confidence and overall quality of life.

Understanding the warning signs and acting fast can prevent thousands of deaths each year. Bestmed Medical Scheme shares the warning signs, as well as preventative measures that can help in lowering the risk of strokes and promoting long-term health and wellness:
