Only the IMAX screen is big enough for these epic new movies

by Tania Griffin

There’s nothing that beats watching a blockbuster movie in the cinema… except if you’re watching it on the biggest screen for a fully immersive sound and picture movie experience.

With nine state-of-the-art IMAX cinemas at select sites around the country, Ster-Kinekor has lined up five blockbuster titles during April and May whose heroes, villains, action characters and superstars can only truly be appreciated on the supersized IMAX screen.

First up, with some rather ghostly and ghoulish creatures taking centre stage, who you gonna call? Well, the Ghostbusters, obviously! Out now at the IMAX, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has to call on Ghostbusters new and old to join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age, when the discovery of an ancient artefact unleashes an evil force. Sharing the IMAX screen with the Ghostbusters is an all-star cast of actors including Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny, who are on a different mission altogether. In Civil War, the heroes – a team of military-embedded journalists – find themselves in a dystopian future America, and racing against time on an adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride to reach Washington, DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. Action on a different level takes over the IMAX screens from 26 April, when Ryan Gosling takes on the adrenaline-pumping role of The Fall Guy. Colt Seavers is a stuntman who left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health. He’s drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie, which is being directed by his ex, goes missing. Watch the trailer.

The biggest apes on the planet take over the IMAX screen from 10 May, with the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations into the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously together, while humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will lead him to question all he has known about the past, and to make choices that will define a future for both apes and humans alike. More action when Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa before her encounter and team-up with Mad Max, releases in IMAX on 24 May. Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home. Watch the trailer.

Don’t miss the opportunity to watch these five epic movies in the best possible cinema format – the larger-than-life IMAX screen – for a truly immersive movie experience.

Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX cinemas are at the following complexes: The Grove in Tshwane; Cradlestone, Eastgate and Mall of Africa in Johannesburg; Gateway in Durban; Baywest in Gqeberha; and Blue Route, CapeGate and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
